NY8229 : Grassy mole habitat among the heather

taken 2 years ago, 3 km from Harwood, County Durham, England

Grassy mole habitat among the heather
Grassy mole habitat among the heather
Among an almost uniform cover of heather (even where there are grouse-management burn scars), this small area about 30x20m is unusual in being grass-covered, and seems to be the favoured location for moles, whose hills seem a lot less peaty than the rest of the area. That's got to be good, moles being native wildlife and this being a nature reserve - most of Widdybank Fell seems to be managed for grouse shooting, which is definitely not preserving nature.
