The Church of St Mary Magdalene - Battlefield Church
A chapel dedicated to St Mary Magdalene was built in 1406 following the Battle of Shrewsbury (1403) in which it is estimated that more than 5000 men were killed or wounded. Many of them are believed to lie in a mass grave beneath, or close to, the chapel site. It was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene as the battle was on the eve of the saint’s day.
In 1410, the chapel was converted into a college of chaplains. The church is the only surviving building from the college. It was closed in 1548, following the dissolution, and became a parish church. This was declared redundant in 1982; it is now maintained and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
It is a Grade II* listed building (List Entry Number: 1246192 Link
Historic England).
