Bolton Castle, The Chapel
Bolton Castle, The Chapel
Bolton Castle is a stark and imposing medieval fortress at the entrance to Wensleydale. It was built by Sir Richard Le Scrope, one of the most powerful men in late 14th-century England, as a luxurious family home as well as a defensive fortress and to be a symbol of his power and wealth.

The castle was completed in 1399 and, despite being partially ‘slighted’ by Cromwell’s army during the English Civil War, the castle is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles. It is a Grade I listed building (List Entry Number: 1130885 LinkExternal link Historic England) and Scheduled Monument (Historic England List Entry Number: 1003582 LinkExternal link ).
