Owl, Chetham’s School of Music, Long Millgate, Manchester
This stonework with an owl is located at the south end of the front of the building that was built during 1873-1878 for Manchester Grammar School for Boys. Link The grammar school left for Rusholme in 1930 and Chetham’s School of Music has occupied the building since 1978. It has been a Grade II listed building since 1974. Link
The owl might reflect the Manchester Grammar School motto ‘Sapere Aude’ (Dare to be Wise) and the presence of three owls in the school crest. Link
Alternatively, it might allude to Hugh Oldham, Bishop of Exeter at the time he founded the Manchester Free Grammar School for Lancashire Boys (later Manchester Grammar School for Boys) in 1515. Link
Go to Oldham, the town 13 km (8 miles) northeast of Chetham’s School, and you might hear it pronounced as ‘Owl-dam’.
