Hyde Civic Square
Hyde used to have a vibrant colourful market. In 2012 a massive amount of money was used to renovate/refurbish it. New stalls were erected with roofs and access to power points. Now all but one of the stalls have been ripped out and sent to the scrapheap. On market days traders must now bring pop-up stalls or use one of a few that are still provided. The aim, according to Tameside MBC (nicknamed "Shameside council" by many Hydonians), is to create a space that can be used for "events" that will create footfall for the Shopping Centre (locally referred to as "The Mall"). The children's carousel continues to operate in one corner, for now. Even the pigeons are looking perplexed by the changes.
Cooke's Children's Carousel
The roundabout on Hyde Market was manufactured by Halsteads of Sowerby Bridge in 1897. It was established on Hyde Market in 1919 by John William (Jack) Greaves. In the 1920s he passed it to his daughter Lily and her husband Bill Cooke. It has now been in the Cooke family for three generations.
