Chamberlain Clock and former bank
Chamberlain Clock and former bank

The Grade II listed LinkExternal link Chamberlain Clock is the most visible and perhaps memorable of the many historic landmarks and interesting features to see in the Jewellery Quarter. The clock was erected in 1903 to commemorate Joseph Chamberlain's visit to South Africa in 1902-3 at the end of the (second) Boer War. Chamberlain, as Secretary of State for the Colonies, had prosecuted the war against the breakaway Dutch farmers with great ruthlessness, and visited the colony to gather information, meet with political leaders and promote a British 'New Nation' there. He had previously supported the city's jewellers' calls for abolition of duties on silver plate. The clock was refurbished and reinstalled in March 2021.

In the background is the Grade II listed LinkExternal link former Bank. Formerly the premises of The Birmingham District and Counties Bank, formed in 1889. This branch was opened on December 18th 1905. In recent years it was a branch of Barclays but is now closed.
The Chamberlain Clock

The Chamberlain Clock stands at the junction of Warstone Lane, Vyse Street and Frederick Street. It was built to commemorate Joseph Chamberlain's tour of South Africa (December 1902-Febraury 1903) after the end of the Second Boer War. It is made from cast iron and was officially unveiled in 1904. Originally powered by clockwork it was later changed to run off electricity.
