Crewe Station, Platform 9
Crewe Station, Platform 9
Platform 9 is the only platform at the north end of the station which does not have access to the main line to the north. In view is the former Crewe North Junction signal box, now part of the Crewe Railway Heritage Centre.
Crewe railway station

This railway station, opened in 1837, was once among the busiest in the world and has passed into folklore. It is still a significant railway junction, where the trunk line from London Euston splits into three branches for North Wales, Manchester and the main line continuing towards Preston and Glasgow (the Liverpool branch leaves the main line at weaver Junction about 5 miles south of Warrington). To the south there are lines to Stoke/Derby and Shrewsbury/Cardiff. Freight trains usually avoid the station by using tracks to the west which pass under the main line and Chester branch in tunnels.

The station buildings were refurbished extensively in 1985, and are being refurbished again from 2014 onwards. The Hig h Speed Two project (HS2) brought the possibility of the station eventually being replaced altogether, but cancellation of the Manchester leg of HS2 in 2024 seems to have killed that idea.

It saw continued use until 19 July 1985 when it was decommissioned for a redesign of Crewe station and its track layout and signalling.
