The River Severn, swollen by Storm Christoph, overwhelmed temporary flood defences at around midnight on Saturday (January 23) and dozens of homes were evacuated. The barriers on Beales Corner were breached and water spilled onto nearby roads.
The river was peaking at around 5.4m (17ft 8in) in Bewdley on the Saturday. The highest level ever recorded in the town was 5.56m in November 2000.
The River Severn
The River Severn is the longest river in Britain, at about 354 kilometres (220 miles). Its source is on Plynlimon near Llanidloes, Powys, in the Cambrian Mountains. It then flows through Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. The Severn is the greatest river in terms of water flow in England and Wales.
