SU8504 : The Cathedral Organ

taken 2 years ago, near to Chichester, West Sussex, England

The Cathedral Organ
The Cathedral Organ
The organ, which includes some of the oldest organ pipes still in use in England (dating from the 1678 instrument made by Renatus Harris) was moved into the North Transept in the early 19th century, and thus escaped damage when the tower and spire fell inwards in 1861. After the tower was rebuilt, the current oak organ case was installed in 1888 to the designs of Dr Arthur Hill. In the period 1984-86 the firm of N.P. Mander Ltd restored the organ, and removed the electric and pneumatic tracking modifications of the early 20th century, reverting to mechanical play throughout.

Much is written on the web about this organ, I will offer a few links - LinkExternal link - LinkExternal link - LinkExternal link .

There are actually five organs in the building, listed at LinkExternal link
Chichester Cathedral

Chichester Cathedral was founded as a cathedral in 1075, when the seat of the bishop was moved from Selsey. The Cathedral has architecture in both the Norman and the Gothic styles. It has two architectural features that are unique among England's medieval cathedrals - a free-standing medieval bell tower (or campanile) and double aisles. The cathedral contains two rare medieval sculptures, and many modern art works including tapestries, stained glass and sculpture, many of these commissioned by Dean Hussey.
The Cathedral is 408ft (123m) in length and 157ft (48m) in width, its spire is 277ft (84.5m) in height
