NY2827 : Path to Lonscale Fell

taken 12 years ago, near to Applethwaite, Cumbria, England

Path to Lonscale Fell
Path to Lonscale Fell
This path leads from Jenkin Hill and Flag Pots to the summit of Lonscale Fell.
The dry stone wall has almost completely collapsed. Wall builders would always try to find a supply of stone nearby and where possible above where the stone was going to be used, and shallow diggings near the summit of Lonscale Fell indicate that this is where the stone would have come from. However, the local Skiddaw Slate is soft and does not make a lasting building material, being susceptible to degradation from frost, hence the ruined state of the wall.
