St Agatha, Easby: James Thompson memorial window
St Agatha, Easby: James Thompson memorial window
The two-light stained glass window is in memory of James Witham Thompson of nearby St Martin's House who was killed almost at the end of World War I (on 1 November 1918) and of his sister Hannah Gertrude who died suddenly later the same month (of a broken heart, perhaps, or of the Spanish Flu?) Above the soldier figure in the left light is the motto of the Royal Artillery; the right light depicts the figure of Hope.
Church of St Agatha, Easby

A Grade I listed parish church near Richmond in North Yorkshire (list entry 1131607). Built from the late 12th century, with later additions and restored in 1869 by Sir G G Scott. Its earlier history was bound up with the adjacent Premonstratensian abbey, which is now a tourist attraction. The church is counted by Simon Jenkins among his 'Thousand best churches in England'.
