SO8641 : Course of the old A4104
taken 2 years ago, near to Ryall, Worcestershire, England
Prior to alterations the existing A38/A4104 Junction was a staggered crossroads. Here the north/south A38, linking Tewkesbury with Worcester, and the east/west A4104 running between the towns of Upton-upon-Severn and Pershore meet.
The staggered crossroads generally copes with the volume of traffic, however, at peak times it can prove to be a little of a bottle neck with queuing traffic. The A38 serves as an alternative route for traffic using the M5 when there is an accident or closure on the motorway; on these occasions this can cause traffic to back up considerably from the direction of Upton-upon-Severn. The A4104 from the west is the route for traffic travelling from Malvern and joining the M5 motorway via the M50 junction 1. Malvern also has the Three Counties Showground, staging major events which also can cause queuing at this junction.
The County Council has identified that the junction requires improvements to address the problem and improve traffic flow. Work began on construction of this site in July 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in autumn 2022.
