You are not necessarily a "reprobate". Access rights apply equally to the field as the road when there is not a standing crop. Core paths are not like public footpaths in Wales or England, nor are they intended to be and confer no additional access rights.
Core paths are very useful in that they usually mean that a through route is possible without serious obstructions. East Lothian's core paths can be found here:
