Statue in the formal garden at Restoration House
Charles II was said to have stayed here on the night of 28th May 1660 at his Restoration. The next day he made his triumphal return to London on his 30th birthday. It was also the model for Satis House in 'Great Expectations' and bears much more of a similarity to Miss Havisham's house as described by Dickens than Satis House which is nearer the castle.
Restoration House is open two days a week and has a wonderful interior as well as surprisingly extensive gardens. See
Link and
Link for more detail. This is the formal garden created from 2010 onwards. All the water comes from natural springs. The 17th century statue of Castor is made from Barnack stone. He has a water loving beaver at his feet.
