Southport revisited - The Monument
Southport revisited - The Monument
Back in the 1950s, there were no traffic lights at the Monument, the busy intersection of London Street with Lord Street at the very centre of town. Instead a policeman stood on a little podium directing traffic - even far into the night illuminated by floodlight. By today's standard, an incredibly wasteful use of manpower.
Southport Revisited

My teenage years from 1949 to 1955 were spent in Southport and this is where my interests and attitudes were formed. And for the following six years, Southport was still my base. My parents continued to live in Southport for the rest of their lives, so I paid an annual visit to the town, and from 1997 when I moved back north my visits were much more frequent. But since my parents died in 2004, I have had little reason to visit.

I made no photographic record of Southport in the early years, but have plenty of memories. In 2021 I returned for a day and recorded my visit on Geograph. It has given me the opportunity and motivation to comment on the many changes since I first lived in Southport 72 years ago.
