SK7511 : Distant hills
taken 4 years ago, near to Burrough on The Hill, Leicestershire, England
A huge univalate (single-walled) Hill Fort, at the end of a ridge of high land in Leicestershire. It is a scheduled ancient monument.
The fort seems to date from the early bronze age, and was continually improved and enlarged through the Iron age, forming the capital of the Corieltauvi (whom the Romans called "Coritani"). It was so occupied until the Roman invasion of the first century, after which the site was settled in the Roman manner: with rectangular rather than circular buildings.
The site has been used by the University of Leicester to train archaeologists, and they regularly dig it.
