Castell Coch

Castell Coch is a wonderful Gothic Revival fantasy castle with sumptuous interiors, built 1871-1891 on the site of a ruined 13th century castle, by William Burges for John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. The 13th century castle was severely damaged during the Welsh rebellion in the early 14th century and deteriorated to a complete ruin by the 19th century. The 3rd Marquess and his successors rarely used the restored castle, preferring the comfort and opulence of the main residence Cardiff Castle and in 1950 the 5th Marquess of Bute placed the castle in the care of The Ministry of Works. It is grade I listed and lovingly cared for by Cadw LinkExternal link
