Woodhead Tunnels (western portals)
Woodhead Tunnels (western portals)
The oldest two tunnels, left and middle were built in the Victorian era and at the time were among the longest railway tunnels in the world at a shade over three miles long. Building both these tunnels resulted in a great loss of life. The first tunnel (left) construction started in 1838, the deaths were due to rock falls but the second tunnel which started construction some nine years later the death toll was mostly due to a Cholera outbreak. Many of the workmen were buried at the Woodside Church. The third and much larger tunnel was built between 1949 and 1953 and construction of this even resulted in six deaths. Today, tunnels 1 and 2 are blocked up but tunnel three is used to carry high power electricity cables rather than having unsightly pylons over the Pennines.
