Northwards from the foot - Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire
A view looking northwards from the foot of the T Canal. T A (Thomas Arthur in later life a Vicar of Cam) Ryder was told as a child that the statue in the water represented Neptune. There was a Colchester family tradition that the statue was of a river god washed up from the Severn. The involvement of the Colchester family with this place began when Duncombe Colchester bought Westbury Court in 1547. Between 1696 and 1705 Maynard Colchester had designed and built this Dutch style water garden, now the only surviving example in Britain. During the late 18th century landscaped gardens and parks became more popular following the appearance of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown on the horticultural stage. Time photo taken not available.
