Crowd control at the 2021 University Boat race near Ely
The 2021 University Boat Race, between crews from Cambridge and Oxford, took place between Ely and Littleport in Cambridgeshire. The annual race was moved from its traditional course on the River Thames because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and also safety concerns with Hammersmith Bridge over the Thames. No crowds were allowed to watch this race with roads, footpaths and bridges adjacent to the course all being closed to the public.
The 1944 race was also held on this straight stretch of the River Great Ouse between Queen Adelaide near Ely and Littleport. The 1944 race finished here and there is a plaque in the bank to commemorate the event, see Link. The 2021 race was rowed in the opposite direction, it started here and the crews raced away from the camera towards Littleport.
