The lake is just over 200m long and forms the centrepiece of the gardens.

The gardens were developed by the Furness Railway company but have for a long time been in the care of the local authority (currently South Lakes District Council) as a public park. The park has a total area of about 1.9ha, nearly half of which is taken up with the spring-fed balancing pond.
