Forest Way was once the East Grinstead to Tunbridge Wells Railway. It is now a popular walking and cycle route between East Grinstead and Groombridge.
The railway was opened in 1866 and closed at the beginning of 1967. Ironically Dr Beeching who lived near to this line just outside East Grinstead, was a season ticket holder and travelled regularly over this very route. It is now an attractive cycle track and footpath.
Withyham station was opened on 1st October 1866, at the same time as the line from East Grinstead to Tunbridge Wells. It was closed on 2nd January 1967 at the same time as the rest of the route. Further east the line is still open as the preserved Spa Valley Railway. The road behind where I am standing was where the level crossing was situated and leads up to Balls Green and Withyham. It is still called Station Road. In this photograph taken from the Forest Way, the old platform edge is level with the hedge.
