Axbridge, Somerset

Axbridge is a historic village in Somerset. It boasts a mediaeval market square. The Strawberry Line path and National Cycle Network route 26 both pass through the centre of the village.

More information about Axbridge is available on the Visit Somerset website: LinkExternal link

Strawberry Line path

The Strawberry Line path is a mainly traffic-free path for walking and cycling in mid-Somerset. When completed, it will stretch for 30 miles, from the Bristol Channel at Clevedon, to Shepton Mallet, via Cheddar and Wells. The route generally uses a dismantled railway line.

The name "strawberry line" refers to the strawberries which were grown in fields around Cheddar, and transported from there by train.

Part of the Strawberry Line path forms part of National Cycle Network route 26.

More information about the Strawberry Line path can be found here: LinkExternal link and also on Sustrans' website: LinkExternal link

National Cycle Network route 26

National Cycle Network route 26 will, when completed, form a cycling route from the Bristol Channel at Portishead, crossing Somerset and Dorset to reach Portland Bill. The completed route will pass through Clevedon, Cheddar, Wells, Glastonbury, Sherborne, Dorchester and Weymouth.

More information can be found on Sustrans' website: LinkExternal link

The National Cycle Network

The National Cycle Network is a network of cycle routes. It was created by the charity Sustrans LinkExternal link (Sustainable Transport), aided by a National Lottery grant.

Many routes aim to minimise contact with motor traffic, though 70% of them are on roads. In some cases the NCN uses pedestrian routes, disused railways, minor roads, canal towpaths, or traffic-calmed routes in towns and cities.
