The Lammermuir Hills are managed for Red Grouse [Lagopus lagopus] shooting; the management, by burning in patches, encourages the growth of young heather, on which they feed, and results in characteristic patches in the landscape NT6262 : Muirburn pattern on Green Cleugh Rig. Plenty of heather moorland about, but for some reason this one had decided to hang out on the edge of the road to Killpallet.
