Blooming heather on Smardale Fell
Unlike much of the heather moorland further east in the Pennines which is wet and peaty on an impervious underlying rock base, Smardale Fell is mainly on limestone with drier soils. Looking east into a shallow valley, a closed contour indicates a depression, typical of karst scenery as most of the surface water drains away into the permeable strata below. There are no surface-flowing streams above 250m ASL over a large area. Beyond Rassett Hill with its tumulus on top, the distant view extends to Mallerstang Edge.
