Old tramway route in Howden Clough, now Kirklees Way / LCW
This track was once the route of the colliery tramway from Birkby Brow Colliery to West End Colliery, whence a standard gauge railway siding joined the main Leeds-Dewsbury railway lower down the clough. The pit was probably opened in the early 19th century, as it appears on the 1854 map (without the tramway); the tramway appears on the 1907 map but (from another source) the pit had closed before 1951 when it was capped off, and the tramway was no longer shown on the 1966 6-inch map. This section of it now forms a public footpath that makes up part of both the Kirklees Way and Leeds Country Way, the Leeds/Kirklees boundary being along the bottom of Howden Clough.
Leeds Country Way
The Leeds Country Way is a 62 mile (99km) long circular route around Leeds using mainly public footpaths.
