Snowy hills reflected in the River Rawthey at Cautley
Frost still coats the grass at quite low level as we start our walk up into the Howgills on the way to Sedbergh. Snowline lies at about 500m - a bit higher on sunny slopes. With the ground frozen and nothing much thawing, the river is low, but still has enough water to reflect the sunlit slopes above. At 663m, Great Dummacks has enough snow on top for nordic skiing, but the steep slopes of the Howgills make them more of an alpine skiing venue, and the snow doesn't lie deep or low enough for an alpine tour today, so it's just a walk with ice axes and plastic mountaineering boots.
