Banqueting hall, Chatelherault
Banqueting hall, Chatelherault
Inside the western wing of the Category A listed hunting lodge LinkExternal link at Chatelherault. This is the banqueting hall created by William Adam for the fifth Duke of Hamilton between 1731 and 1744. The plasterwork was originally created by Thomas Clayton about 1743, but unfortunately did not survive, so what is seen here is a reconstruction of the original. The painting by John Wootton (actually a photograph of the original) depicts the Duke of Hamilton's racehorse Victorious at Newmarket in 1733. The original painting is in the Yale Center for British Art, Yale University.

Taken on a visit by members of Glasgow Natural History Society to Chatelherault Country Park, three months before the park opened to visitors (in September 1987).
