This fine old Victorian mansion became a youth hostel in 1959. It has an enviable position overlooking Llyn Gwynant and nowadays offers luxuries such as en-suite private bedrooms and a licensed bar that would have been unimagineable when this photograph was taken in 1984. In those days accommodation was strictly dormitories only and the consumption of alcohol on the premises was against the rules. None of that, of course, detracted from the beauty of the setting.
