Lead slag
The dark and glassy looking slag heaps are the leftovers from the lead smelting process. Nature is slowly recovering, not only from the initial upheaval of the mining, but also from the effects of lead levels in the soil. Such poisoning has had a noticeable impact on the wildlife hereabouts.
