Wonder of Woolies - Stroud, Gloucestershire
Taken from the junction of King Street and George Street, this is the former Woolworths store in Stroud. The chain was founded in the USA by Frank Winfield Woolworth in 1879 and the first UK store opened in Church Street, Liverpool in 1909. By 2008 there were 807 stores but in November of that year the chain went into administration and all stores had closed by the following January. The Poundland chain opened its first store in 1990 in Burton upon Trent - with Head Office in Willenhall, West Midlands there are now over 750 stores in Britain and Ireland. Sources: poundland.co.uk, wikipedia and woolworthsmuseum.co.uk. Time taken 3.23 pm BST (British Summer Time).
