The line of pyramidal pylons linking Cramond Island with the shore were built during the Second World War as part of the defences of the Firth of Forth with its vital naval dockyard at Rosyth. Often referred to as anti-submarine defences, there would in fact never have been sufficient water for submarine operations and the main concern would be to prevent surface operations by inshore craft such as E-boats. The top line of defence, passing through the holes, consisted of a steel hawser, but remarkably this was not added until 1946. The additional concrete on the top of the pylons is clearly visible. There are a couple of intermediate anchor points where attachment points can be seen.
