Caerleon - Ancient Roman Fortress Town of Isca
At the southern edge of Caerleon, the bilingual (Welsh/English) sign faces the B4596 Caerleon Road from Newport.
From AD 75 to about 300, Caerleon was one of the three permanent legionary bases in Roman Britain. As the Roman fortress of Isca (often referred to as the "city of the legions"), it was home to the Second Augustan Legion. The fortress was established in AD 75 at the behest of Emperor Vespasian to pacify and control Welsh insurgents.
