Silver Severn at evening - Coaley Peak, Gloucestershire
This view taken from Coaley Peak Picnic Site, which lies between Frocester and Nympsfield beside the B4066 Stroud - Dursley road, takes me back to the 30 years I spent in Gloucestershire, a time of happiness and of feeling in my element. Many memories come back to me of people and places I knew, days out with the Cotswold Voluntary Wardens, BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) and with Stroud Rambling Club. During this time I met the love of my life and the feeling was mutual although, having paid little attention to my own welfare and direction through the years, I let her slip through my fingers feeling I had little or nothing to offer. Those days are far behind me now but I will always regret that mistake. I get back to Gloucestershire occasionally but mostly all that remain now are the ghosts of the past, and those who are no longer with us. Looking out from here towards the Severn and Forest of Dean and the mound of May Hill to north-west I had a deep sense of melancholy, of time past and of loss.
