NS2056 : Former NATO depot at Fairlie
taken 7 years ago, near to Fairlie, North Ayrshire, Scotland
The deopt (including the adjacent pier) opened in 1959/60 and was most recently responsible for the maintenance of moorings, storage of salvage equipment and as a logistic support base for vessels of NATO nations operating in the Clyde area. When built, the pier was able to accommodate the largest NATO ships of the time.
The large sheds (65,000 sq ft) and pier are rail linked, with sidings alongside the Glasgow to Largs line. Secret Scotland Linkreports that the sheds were equipped with nuclear decontamination equipment, including special railway carriages to receive contaminated seamen from the pier and deliver them to the shed for decontamination and onward travel, by another special train, to a specialist naval hospital.
The depot closed in the mid 1990s and was bought by a marina business in 2003.
There is a display of former NATO anchors and mooring gear from the depot at the nearby Largs Yacht Haven Link .
