Newent railway station platforms
Compare with SO7126 : Newent railway station remains, taken in 2010. The platforms are clear of vegetation and the site bordered with Heras fencing in connection with canal restoration work.
The railway - which ran from Gloucester to Ledbury - was built for the most part on the route of the redundant - before - it - opened Hereford - Gloucester canal. The railway closed to passengers in June 1959 and only the section between Gloucester and Dymock was retained for freight use, itself closing in 1964. Newent's bypass was built along the course of the railway in the 1970s. Now, in yet another twist of the tale, the Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal Trust are planning to not only restore the entire canal to navigation, but also to rebuild Newent station as a canalside attraction. See Link
for more information about that.
