The birds at the centre have different types of perches according to what suits them and is best for their feet. The falcons and eagles tend to sit on "block perches" (SE6083 : Eagle on a Block Perch at the National Centre for Birds of Prey) which simulate the rocks on which they would naturally sit in the wild; The hawks and buzzards sit on "bow perches" which simulate tree branches. Here, a Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) is resting on a bow perch.
The National Centre for Birds of Prey

The National Centre for Birds of Prey opened in 2013; it is set in the ancient woodlands of Duncombe Park on the outskirts of Helmsley. The centre has around 40 aviaries, almost all of which are on view to visitors. Most of the aviaries are in the form of timber barns which shelter the impressive collection birds from wind and rain and prevent the droppings of wild birds getting in from above. There are two or three flying demonstrations every day using different birds so that no bird flies twice on the same day. These demonstrations are designed to show the birds’ natural behaviour and their different flying styles.

When first opened, the centre was called the "International for Birds of Prey"; "International" was later replaced by "National" in the name.
