The project which is costing around £100m was approved in 2014 to redeveloped and extend the existing Arndale centre. The Arndale was renamed to The Beacon.

The new extension will replace a large group of building along Terminus Road and Ashford Road to make way for a contemporary design with a main entrance and focal point near the railway station.

The extension will provide around 22 new shops, 7 new restaurants and a 9 screen multiplex cinema between the existing Arndale Centre and the railway station.

A new entrance was completed along Terminus Road in 2016 and clearing of the existing buildings along Ashford Road and Terminus Road began in April 2017, with construction due to start in August 2017 and opening in November 2018.
