Midsummer Midnight at Loch Shark, North of Scotland
This photo of the moon above Loch Shark on the west coast of Scotland shows how light it stays at night in the northern extremities of mainland Britain in midsummer. At the time this photo was taken (00:40 on 1st July, about 2h15m after sunset) it was still possible to see and faintly read the numbers on the camera dial.
With the sun about 8 degrees below the horizon, this part of the night is classed as "nautical twilight," which is the second of three stages of twilight (civil, nautical and astronomical twilight). During nautical twilight, the ground may be dark but the sky is still light enough to allow the horizon to be observed.
The camera was set to give as realistic a representation as possible of the actual light. Although this photo was taken 45 minutes before the darkest point of the night at this location, and 10 days after midsummer, it is to all practical intents and purposes an accurate representation of the midsummer midnight.
