TF3243 : Somersault signal on the Boston docks branch
taken 10 years ago, near to Boston, Lincolnshire, England
Somersault signal on the Boston docks branch
The last working example of its type on the railway network, although there are examples on some preserved lines.
The somersault type of signal has a centrally pivoted arm and was devised following a serious accident in the mid 19th century which resulted from a signal showing a wrong indication because it had been prevented from moving by heavy snow. Unfortunately this example is missing the lamp and spectacles plate needed to show lights at night, but the branch presumably is only ever worked during daylight now.
