Woodcroft Crossing near Helpston
Woodcroft Crossing is located on Woodcroft Road near Helpston. The crossing spans the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and the Peterborough to Leicester line. Woodcroft Crossing has the unusual distinction of being the last remaining manned gated level crossing (i.e., without automatic barriers) on any British main railway line.
A footbridge originally spanned the ECML but this was removed when the overhead power cables were installed. The metal rod underneath the tracks which previously opened both gates simultaneously broke many years ago and has never been replaced; consequently, the crossing keeper is now required to open the two gates individually. The former crossing keeper's house, which now appears to be a private residence, is located to the left of the crossing.
