The Westminster was opened in 1878 as a purpose built, luxury, sea front 40 bedroom hotel. Having been requisitioned during the first world war by the military and naval services, it was subsequently purchased by Greenall Whitleys in 1919 and extended into number 12 East Parade, in the 1950s to create 54 bedrooms. It went into a downhill spiral from the late 1980s until it was almost derelict in 2002.

In May 2002 the hotel was purchased by a private family, and has gradually been upgraded. LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
