Charters real ale bar and restaurant, Peterborough
Charters, a real ale pub and restaurant, is situated on a converted Dutch barge originally known as the "Leendert-R". The 176-foot long vessel was built in 1907 and remained a working barge until 1990, carrying consignments of grain and sand on rivers and canals in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. It was then brought across the North Sea and is now permanently moored on the River Nene just west of the Town Bridge, which is visible on the left of the image. (As the barge was too tall to fit under the bridge, it had to be "sunk" and refloated in order for it to reach its present location).
Charters opened in September 1991. The bar occupies the lower deck while the upper deck houses an Oriental restaurant called East. Its close proximity to Peterborough United's London Road ground means that Charters, which also boasts a large beer garden on the riverbank, is very popular with football supporters on match days.
