The bridge crosses the river Exe. Here its upright and counterweight (in the form of a millwheel) are reflected in the flood relief channel
River Exe

The River Exe rises on Exmoor and flows south to Exeter and The English Channel. Its estuary is a good example of a Ria (flooded river valley). It is tidal to Countess Wear, just south of Exeter SX9390 : Countess Weir, River Exe. More information LinkExternal link

Exe Flood Relief Channel

Work started in 1965 on the construction of the Flood relief channel, it was completed in the 1970's, at a cost of 8 million. The channel is designed to take excess water out of the River Exe.
