This is part of a large area around Leadhills village which is a Scheduled Historic Monument because of the remains of workings and infrastructure related to the transport, mining and smelting of lead ore.

This is the site of on old mine named Wilson's Shaft or Wilson's mine after a director of the Leadhills Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company Ltd.
