Road bridge and level crossing, Manningtree
There are two ways for motor vehicles to cross the railway line at Manningtree. The road bridge has very low headroom, just 9 feet 6 inches, and is unsuitable for larger vehicles such as buses and lorries. The level crossing adjacent to the bridge can be used by higher vehicles.

In this image, the level crossing barriers are down and the lights are flashing, indicating that a train is due.

The railway is electrified using overhead cables. The gantry above the bridge carries the cables.

The line opened in several sections but was mostly open by 1862.
