Proposed site for Cohousing development adjacent to Bridport Hospital
Proposed site for an affordable housing scheme for Development of 34 custom build houses and flats, a common house, access road and car park to form a cohousing neighbourhood.
Cohousing is a type of collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their own neighbourhood. A cohousing
scheme is designed to encourage interaction between its residents which will help forge a strong, cohesive community. The essence of cohousing
is a combination of self-contained dwelling units with some shared facilities. Each household has its own front door and residents can live independently.
Alongside this are shared facilities often within a ‘Common House’, where residents can eat together when they wish, and also a shared sitting
room, activity space, children’s play room, large kitchen and laundry facilities. The principles of cohousing work together to create a place that is more sustainable, more affordable and more neighbourly to live in.
Whilst this is generally welcomed as a way to combat the affordable housing shortage in the area, there are problems with the site's single restricted access being along Hospital Lane and its remoteness from the town centre, facilities, policing, parking, etc. The roofs of the Community Hospital can be seen on the right adjacent to the field.
