Freestanding trees in a field can signal that the hedgerow in which they stood has been removed. Sure enough, old maps show a field boundary here. It may have been taken out to form a viable area following the construction of the A45 dual carriageway, and the junction with Maxstoke Lane behind the camera, around 1960.
