Cast iron is relatively rare as a material for gravestones. This is a particularly ornate example, dating from 1836. The principal person memorialised died in February 1835, but his widow who died in September 1836 is also included, and it would not have been possible to add to an existing casting, in the way that new names can be incised on a stone memorial.
