Porthgain harbour
Porthgain (Welsh for "beautiful port") is a picturesque little spot on the Pembrokeshire coast. It was previously a transport hub for the local slate quarrying industry, and later for locally made bricks and crushed dolerite (which was used as roadstone). The industrial use of the site ended in the 1930s, but the harbour is still used by local fishing vessels and - in the summer - leisure craft. The whole place is teeming with industrial remnants and is well worth a visit, especially out of season when there's hardly a soul about.
This is a general view of the harbour, taken in March 2009. The enormous brick structures on the right are the old stone hoppers, used for storing the stone before loading it onto the transport ships.
